Want to Network the computers in your home just like the BigPond flyer suggests? You don't need BigPond, and you can do it yourself, or we'll help you. Check out the Product pages for information, tips and the hardware you'll need.

  • Before you start doing it yourself,  we can send you our 50 Tips on Setting up a Home computer network. Click here.

  • It's not that difficult to do it yourself, but there are a large number of factors and variables to bear in mind, so you may prefer some help.

Well, as a minimum we suggest you will need an Internet Router of some description, preferably with a number of ethernet ports, or a wireless router.  We suggest a NETGEAR DG834G Wireless-G ADSL2+ Modem Router which will provide the ADSL modem and both wireless and wired networking capability all in a single box.

Once you've got the hardware you need to consider the following aspects of your network to make sure it works properly:

1.       physical placement of router with respect to the ADSL phone line and the other computers

2.       filtering of other telephone handsets, burglar alarms etc

3.       cabling between computers and router

4.       names of your computers

5.       name of your workgroup

6.       communication protocol(s) to be used

7.       band / frequency / channel of your wireless network

8.       IP address subnet of your network

9.       Static or dynamic IP addresses for your computers / devices

10.   configuration of router

11.   configuration of computers and any network printers
